Like many people on the outside, I have bought into the popular fascination with MIT. Of course, most of what I know is informed by films and TV shows so Geeks and Greeks is a little off my beaten track. First of all the illustrations are superb. I find graphic novels a bit hit a miss but from a readers perspective they just work. The characters are so well imagined and ooze personality. Very clever. As for the story, well that had me in hoots. It would be so easy to wax lyrical on a book like this but I am sure most readers will pick it up and recognize it for the genuine gem of a read that it is. Excellent!

Geeks Greeks Steve Altes Andy Fish 9780996350440 Books Reviews

This graphic novel was very funny and quite entertaining. I lived in the same Fraternity as the author, only a few years after he graduated. I can state for a fact that many of the stories are more truthful than you think, although the pace of hacking was increased for literary effect, and a few of te hacks were actually "cleaned up" to make them a little safer than the real ones were. It's a very nostalgic read, and I'm still trying to figure out if one of the characters is at least in part based on me, or someone else like me. I have first hand knowledge of some of the pranks shown, and can tell you that it really was like that, and sometimes worse. For example, at least a 1/2 dozen times a year, we would rappel down the front of our fraternity house -- using all of the proper safety gear. It was scary and great fun, but safe, and it always caused a big traffic jam as passerbys in cars stopped to look up and see what was happening.

The Tuxedo part was true too. We would have a big casino night party, where guys wore tux's if you had them, and suits if not, and we encouraged our dates to wear elegant dresses. We rented tables for all of vegas's best games, and had a blast!

Shooting exploding watermelons through windows... I'm sure it probably happened. I remember times after spring break when we shot other explosives through windows. With the right, easily obtainable equipment, we could aim them very accurately, and put them right through an open window of someone trying to study on a hot day. Talk about a reaction!!!.. and retribution was sure to be methodical and swift.

We had so many hacks, and also straight pranks of each other which were sometimes called "training wars"... both the simple yet diabolical, to the complex or plain dumb. One of the funniest was using a 9V battery and some low-tech equipment to wire the top drawer of a prankster's desk so that a pack of firecrackers went off in his bed when he opened the drawer. After goofing off for hours, he wondered why a big crowd was assembled to watch him finally settle down to do his work.

As soon as he opened his desk drawer.... pop... pop... pap... pap... bang!, and everyone was laughing including him. Then he realized that everyone was laughing much harder than him. Suddenly it hit him. "Noooooo!!!" he yelled as he ran to his bed, and stomped on a few smoldering holes in his bed sheets! I still laugh when I think of that!

This was a great, fun, inspiring read, full of and based on so many truths that people who didn't go to MIT, might not realize just how true so much of this is. I was good friends with the guy who's dorm room contents were moved onto the frozen ice of the Charles river. He spent so much time at his girlfriend's place, that his roommates wondered how many days it would take him to notice!!! I can also think of a few "Marvins" who did everyone's home work, but I didn't realize that's why we had those geeky little guys around!!!! (I hope I wasn't a Marvin!).

Enjoy the read, and remember to work hard, play hard, be safe and have fun. Life is too short to do otherwise!
Geeks & Greeks is a terrific look inside MIT Greek culture. (Full disclosure- I attended MIT a few years ahead of author Steve Altes, and lived in a fraternity.) Everyone thinks of MIT as the world's nerd factory. MIT is often portrayed in media as a collection of academically brilliant, socially awkward scientists and engineers. Since the late-1970s, MIT has remade itself as a place for renaissance nerds to thrive by admitting scientifically brilliant but also well-rounded students. These renaissance nerds are quite accomplished in athletics, music, art, and other pursuits while being brilliant students in science and engineering. While there are still some stereotypical nerds at MIT, they are now far outnumbered by renaissance nerds.

Altes captures this atmosphere perfectly. The characters in this story are involved in all sorts of hijinks and shenanigans and are seen doing very little studying. The living groups (dormitories and fraternities) are fertile breeding grounds for all sorts of pranks, or "hacks" in MIT parlance. He captures quite accurately the funnier side of MIT fraternity life, particularly in Boston's Back Bay where most of them are located- usually within walking distance across the Charles River from the Cambridge campus. Street characters like the Harvard Bridge Troll and Mr. Butch (not in this book) were a real part of Boston life.

I was skeptical about the graphic novel format of the book, but I thought the illustrations really added to the story telling. The pictures and the terrific colorization really brought the story to life.

I highly recommend this book. It will give the reader an insight to MIT life that is seldom portrayed in television and movies. I'm looking forward to the sequel (hint hint Steve).
Fantastic! Great mix of Greek attitude and geeky humor. I expected all the STEM jokes but was pleasantly surprised by the literature and humanities wit.
Fascinating, funny and a little frustrating, just like Steve in high school was!
Geeks & Greeks is smart and funny. Forget superheroes... THIS is what a graphic novel should be. Poignant, dramatic, humorous, it has it all. Andy Fish's art is visually arresting and really captures the emotions of the characters delivering their lines. And Steve Altes's dialogue had me laughing from cover to cover. This is a contender for best graphic novel of 2016. Prediction this highly cinematic graphic novel will be made into a movie someday.
So to be honest- I'm not really a graphic novel guy but a friend knowing my love of all things Geek and Greek told me I had to read this -- and WOW- am I happy I did. Super funny. Super Witty, Altes and Fish are two damn clever observers and they are able to translate all that geek speak and culture in a way that's accessible but not insulting at all to the culture- in fact it celebrates Geeks like nothing I've ever read before. If you love Geeks.. and Greeks or just want a super funny satisfying read that will keep you laughing and smiling- this is the book.. I mean graphic novel for you. When is someone going to make a movie out of this by the way- it's such a natural!
